Hartpury College girls takes third Schools Cup victory at the home of rugby

Hartpury College recorded a third successive Continental Tyres Schools Cup win on Thursday 14 March 2024, beating Exeter College 41-5 in the under-18 girls colleges final. 

The match took place at Twickenham for the first time, adding further prestige to the event and creating a real championship atmosphere for all involved. The Continental Tyres Schools Cup is an important part of the age-grade rugby landscape in England.

In a ringing endorsement of Hartpury College’s girls rugby programme, the side showcased their dominance, justifying their reputation as a ‘winning machine’ that has followed them throughout the season.

Abbie Pritchard (Level 3 Extended Diploma Sport (Sport and Exercise Science)) scored a hat-trick, while Daisy Aspinall (A-levels), Gabby Radziejowski (Level 3 Extended Diploma Sport (Rugby)), Alaw Pyrs (Level 3 Extended Diploma Sport (Rugby)) and Hanna Marshall (Level 3 Extended Diploma Sport (Sport and Exercise Science)) were also on the scoresheet in a conclusive victory.

Oli Wilson, Junior Women’s Rugby Academy Manager at Hartpury College said: “Congratulations to the girls on this result, finishing off what has been an outstanding season. To finish on such a high and for the girls to put in a performance like they did at the home of rugby is fantastic, we couldn’t have asked for more.

“We’re a family. That’s what we always talk about, having a family environment, being there for each other & working hard. This approach no doubt contributes to the wider success in our rugby programme, providing a solid foundation that acts as a springboard for the players.

“Full credit to all involved in the organisation of the cup final, creating a day that was a true celebration of girls rugby. Schools rugby is vital for producing future stars, given that it is typically where players fall in love with the game for the first time.”

Hartpury College is passionate about promoting the women’s game through its Women’s Rugby Academy and has a prestigious reputation for honing player skills. The dual career pathway that allows students to train and compete study for qualifications including A-levels, T Levels, diplomas and degrees, is responsible for over 20 England U20s and 10 senior England squad members.

An illustrious rollcall of alumni includes Women’s Rugby World Cup champions such as Alex Matthews and Ceri Large, and many players who’ve secured contracts in 7s and 15s rugby. The institution’s close partnership with Gloucester Rugby has seen the evolution of Gloucester-Hartpury RFC, offering a further pathway for those looking to progress into the professional game.
