Hartpury University is proud to celebrate the contribution of Dr. Victoria Lewis (a Senior Lecturer in Equine Science at the institution) to the recent update of global equestrian qualification standards led by the International Group for Equestrian Qualifications (IGEQ).
Dr. Lewis co-authored the revised standards, which prioritise equine welfare and evidence-based practice. Supported by funding from the FEI, these updates aim to establish a robust framework for equestrian education worldwide, benefiting riders, coaches, and educators.
The updated standards incorporate cutting-edge research in equine learning theory and equitation science, areas in which Dr Lewis specialises.
“It is essential that our approach to equestrian education is grounded in scientific principles, ensuring a horse-centred methodology that aligns with best practices in training and equine welfare,” said Dr. Lewis.
Hartpury University’s commitment to equine welfare and evidence-based practice is already embedded in its academic offerings, including the BSc (Hons) Equine Behaviour and Welfare, MSc Equitation Science, and other equine degrees. These programmes equip students with the knowledge and skills to apply scientific principles to horse training, care, and management, ensuring the highest standards of welfare and ethical practice.
The new IGEQ standards set clear benchmarks across horse knowledge, care, management, riding, and coaching, covering the Olympic disciplines of dressage, showjumping and eventing. Dr Lewis’s contribution reflects Hartpury’s dedication into advancing equestrian education and promoting the wellbeing of horses worldwide.
“By embedding the latest academic research and industry best practices into its qualification framework, the IGEQ is ensuring a horse-centred approach that aligns with the values we instill in our students at Hartpury,” Dr. Lewis added.
Hartpury University is proud to support the work of its large team of equine lecturers in shaping the future of equestrian education, ultimately supporting the equestrian industry’s social licence to operate.
