Hartpury Digital Innovation Farm supporting AI innovation through agrifood programme

Hartpury University and Hartpury College’s Digital Innovation Farm will host two innovative challenges as part of the BridgeAI Agrifood Accelerator programme, a partnership led by Innovate UK, Digital Catapult, and BridgeAI. The programme empowers companies to develop cutting-edge AI solutions to address critical issues in the agrifood sector.

As hosts, Hartpury has designed two challenges to be solved using artificial intelligence: biodiversity monitoring through bioacoustics, led by Dr. Lucy Garrett (Lecturer in Zoology and Conservation Biology), and measuring methane emissions from cow burps, led by Dr. Matt Bell (Director of Agriculture at Hartpury University). Both challenges will aim to drive innovation in sustainable agriculture and environmental monitoring.

Hartpury will provide the successful AI companies with expert support throughout the development process. The solutions to these challenges will be showcased at a dedicated event, offering an opportunity to highlight the transformative potential of AI in tackling real-world agrifood challenges.

This initiative aligns with the Hartpury Digital Innovation Farm’s commitment to advancing innovation and sustainability in agriculture. The outcomes of these projects could serve as impactful case studies for the Research Excellence Framework (REF), demonstrating the value of collaboration between academia and industry in addressing global challenges. In the most recent REF, research outputs from Hartpury was recognised as ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’.

There are also significant associated benefits for Hartpury students, particularly postgraduate students who frequently engage in research activities. By having access to cutting-edge projects, students gain exposure to real-world applications of AI and sustainability practices, enhancing their learning experience and preparing them for careers in research, innovation, and industry. The collaboration fosters a dynamic environment for academic growth and hands-on experience, further strengthening Hartpury’s reputation as a leader in agricultural and conservation education and research.
