Hello, my name is Stephen and I’m an international student from Ghana. I’m studying the BA Sport Business Management degree at Hartpury University.
Achieving my dreams
I’ve always dreamed of playing football, but I believe getting a degree is the most essential thing in my life.
I chose Hartpury because it’s recognised across the world as a top provider for sports education, and would allow me to follow my passion for football whilst also studying my sports business degree.
I know I’m on the right path to make my dreams come true.
A typical day
I normally wake up at 6:15am, ready for football training 8am-10am. Before my feet hit the ground, I take some minutes to pray and how I envision the day. 7am is when the hustle starts.
Training is planned around my studies, to make sure it doesn’t affect my morning lectures. We work with top-notch coaches who help us to be the best version of ourselves.
After training, I get ready for my lessons, which start at 10.30am. I’m currently studying a range of modules, including Human Resources Management and Sports Facility Management.
I’m really enthusiastic about my modules, but personally enjoy Sport Facilities. It’s very student led and involves a lot of discussion about sports industries around the world, and how facilities are used to support, attract and retain customers. We do lots of teamwork and presentations. This has helped me to develop new ideas and become much more confident.
Later in the day, I use the rest of my free time to do my assignments, relax with friends and then go for a walk in the evening.
Gaining industry experience
Work placement has built my confidence over the past few years. Working with a professional club in Demark (FC Nordsjaelland) for a work placement was awe-inspiring and shaped my life. I now know what I want my future to be like, and it’s to stay within the football industry.
During my placement, I got the chance to plan a character development session about legacy for the club’s academy side. I used the confidence and leadership skills I’ve gained from the Right to Dream Academy, Hartpury College, and now University, to lead the session.
BUCS Wednesdays are the best
Wednesdays are dedicated to matches as part of the BUCS league. These are one of the best parts of being at Hartpury. I play for the university men’s first team. In 2019, we had a fantastic season and didn’t lose a single game. I felt so proud for the team and myself as a goalkeeper! After a beautiful win, we have team socials where everyone comes out to celebrate the win.
Shaping my future
At Hartpury, I’ve also been supporting the college football coaches to deliver training session to the future generation footballers. I work with the goalkeepers, helping them to develop their skills.
This is another step to shape my future. Gaining experience in to become a professional coach in the future. I have a long way ahead, but I feel confident that I’m close to making my dream come true.
Feeling at home as an international student
The Hartpury environment is extremely welcoming. Everyone is friendly so it’s easy to approach people from students to staff.
As an international student, I don’t ever feel left out. I’ve got lots of people who support me and everyone makes me feel at home and welcome at Hartpury.
The international support team helped me throughout my application, from getting my visa to arranging transport. When I arrived, they sent me emails with additional support to help me settle.
Final words
I would recommend Hartpury University to international students willing to pursue their dream. Hartpury has got a good reputation globally in terms of facilities and staff work tirelessly to provide the highest-quality education. They make sure we become the best we can be.
