Through a keen interest in swimming before university, and the opportunity to become a swimming teacher, Thomas developed a keen interest in becoming a PE teacher and chose to study BSc (Hons) Physical Education and School Sport at Hartpury University.
“Lecturers have been instrumental in helping me balance my studies and develop in rugby, especially with a busy timetable. Their support ensures I can continue to play at a high level while gaining excellent placements and training. They recently arranged a CPD session with FA trainers that offered teaching methods and activities to use in schools, putting me in a good position to progress onto a PGCE and then into PE teaching.
My favourite part of the course is the variety of placement opportunities. As well as PE, I’ve taught year groups from reception to year 11 a range of subjects and have also accompanied them on school trips, which have provided me with invaluable lessons. One of the most rewarding placements has been working with a local SEMH school and connecting with students so they actively participate and progress in their PE journey. I’ve built valuable connections with local schools and thoroughly enjoy my time there.
I feel ready to transfer my knowledge and experiences in a work setting with my confidence and communication skills having developed significantly. If you’re considering coming to Hartpury, throw yourself in the deep end as there’s a very high chance you’ll swim.”
