Your student room is the place you'll call home for your first year. On this page, you'll find out everything you need to know about moving in and what to bring with you.

What to pack

As you prepare to come to university, we've put together this handy guide to help you pack and settle in.

If you've opted for self-catered halls, a linen and cutlery starter kit can be bought from our online shop.

  • Pans, mugs, bowls, plates and cutlery

  • Oven gloves and tea towels
  • Cloths and washing up liquid
  • Groceries and snacks
  • Duvet, sheets and pillows (standard single)

  • Personal kettle for use in your room (a shared kettle is provided in your kitchen/common room)

We offer a range of welcome packs, to make packing that bit easier. These include a linen pack, cutlery pack, and mattress protector. You can buy yours through our online shop. 

Your room will be furnished with everything you need. There are a few items we ask you not to bring with you.

  • Fridges, freezers, microwaves or toasters
  • Mattresses, electric blankets, electric heaters
  • Rice cookers, steam cookers or deep fat fryers
  • Sandwich makers, George Foreman grills or similar
  • Cubed adaptors or drum reel extension leads
  • Electric air purifiers, candles, tea lights or electric fairy lights, electric LED lights or similar
  • Air fryers
  • Heated clothes airer
  • Pets

Our international students tell us that making decisions about what to pack in your suitcase is a challenge! Try not to bring too much; you can buy lots of the everyday items you need at a reasonable price when you arrive. There are some things you definitely need to bring though, so here’s our advice on tactical packing.

Important items for your hand luggage

When you arrive in the UK, you may be asked to show some documents when you pass through immigration. You should travel with all the following in your hand luggage.

  • Flight or travel tickets
  • Passport (check it is valid)
  • Visa (if applicable)
  • British currency
  • Hartpury acceptance letter
  • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number
  • Proof of travel insurance
  • Original qualification certificates
  • Proof of payment of your tuition fees
  • Medical and prescription records (If you have any pre-existing condition – with English translation, if necessary)
  • Vaccination record information
  • Your enrolment guide
  • Your passport to Hartpury

What to pack? What to buy in the UK?

Although you are coming for a long time,
remember you can buy all the basics in the UK. This will leave you with more room in your suitcase for items that have more meaning for you.

We've included a list of basic items to bring below. Items marked with ** can be bought cheaply in Gloucester once you arrive. The items identified with a * can be bought through our online store. We offer a basic linen pack, cutlery pack, and mattress protector.

If you book the all-inclusive welcome packages, these items will be placed in your room in time for your arrival.

The basics

  • Bed linen standard single size*
  • Duvet/blankets*
  • Pillows*
  • Towels*
  • Basic cutlery/crockery/ mugs*
  • Tea towels*
  • Toiletries, toilet rolls, stationery**
  • Cooking utensils and pans**
  • First aid kit including plasters,
    bandages, and a thermometer**
  • Laptop and mobile phone
  • Any medication you are prescribed on a regular basis
  • Items to help you feel more at home e.g. photos, a cuddly toy, your favourite hoodie
  • Adapter plug for electrical devices

Equipment for your horse

  • Storage box/trunk - maximum 100L and lockable
  • Tack and tack cleaning equipment - x1 saddle and x1 bridle hook provided per stable
  • First aid kit including thermometer
  • Wheelbarrow - a single wheel 120-140L capacity barrow is adequate for efficient mucking out and storage
  • Mucking out tools plus broom - suitable for shaving bedding
  • Hay net(s)
  • Feed/water buckets and feed scoop(s) - no automatic drinkers
  • Rugs: cooler/stable rug/day sheet/lightweight turnout
  • Grooming kit
  • Sponges and washing off equipment
  • Lunging equipment
  • Boots and bandages

Equipment for you

  • Riding hat - current GB standard
  • Gloves - compulsory when leading and lunging
  • Riding boots - long or short with half chaps
  • Yard boots/wellies - trainers not permitted on the yard
  • Waterproofs
  • Dark jodhpurs - jeans/tracksuit bottoms not permitted for riding
  • We strongly advise that you bring a body protector for use whilst Show Jumping or riding Cross Country
